Assurex Global / The Council Foundation Scholarships

Assurex Global Robert P. Ashlock Scholarship

In October 1991, the Assurex Global board of directors established a permanent endowment fund known at the time as the “Robert P. Ashlock Scholarship Fund.” Bob Ashlock served as Assurex Global president & CEO from 1977-1992, and under his leadership the Assurex Development Corporation (ADC) and PAR, Ltd. were established.

Bob’s personal desire was to support professional development and education in agency management and entrepreneurial endeavors. Shortly after the creation of this fund, Bob passed away in January 1992 following a three-year battle with cancer. In 2009, the Assurex Global board of directors approved the transfer of $125,000 from the fund (managed by the Griffith Insurance Education Foundation) to create the Assurex Global Robert P. Ashlock Scholarship and be administered by the The Council Foundation*.

This scholarship is designated for distribution annually to a student in the risk management and insurance program at Temple University in Philadelphia.

*Recognizing the importance of educating young leaders and developing talent early, The Council of Insurance Agents & Brokers (The Council) developed the The Council Foundation (previously called FAME) in 2006. The Council Foundation is focused on recruiting the next generation and making a positive impact on the future of the commercial insurance brokerage industry.

In 2013, an additional $125,000 was transferred to The Council Foundation* to create the Ashlock Game Changer Scholarship. The name “Game Changer” was chosen for a few key reasons — first, Bob Ashlock was named as a “Game Changer” by The Council during its 100th anniversary celebration, something in which Assurex Global is very proud; second, Assurex Global’s independent brokers are often viewed as “game changers” and trusted advisors for their clients; and third, Assurex Global believes that supporting future “game changers” — those students with a strong interest in the brokerage side of our industry — is a solid investment with long-term potential.

Assurex Global is working closely with The Council Foundation to utilize the Ashlock Game Changer Scholarship at colleges and universities that offer a strong sales component within their risk management & insurance major.

John T. Northrup, of our Assurex Global Partner firm based in Lowell, Mass., Fred C. Church, Inc., was a longstanding leader of the Assurex Global benefits practice efforts and also was recognized for establishing the Assurex Global LTD Program – a long-term disability product offering for Assurex Global firms.

John diligently served Assurex Global, and his many contributions will live on for years to come. Assurex Global recognized John for his tireless support at the 2013 Employee Benefits Meeting as he had shared his retirement plans. It was with deep sadness that we learned of John’s sudden passing in May 2013.

In 2014, to honor John’s contributions to Assurex Global, as well as the entire industry, the John T. Northrup Scholarship was established through The Council Foundation.*

With help from Partner contributions, $20,000 was raised, and $5,000 scholarships will be given over the next four years.
