Mental Health Support as Critical as Ever

, ,

As we enter the last few months of 2020, it’s important for employers to remember that many members of their workforce are once again coping with other issues besides continued remote work: remote learning for children, reduced childcare support, poorer weather and shorter days for some, and a backlog of paid time off, to name a few.

Add to this list individual concerns over health and finances, social justice unrest, a potential second wave of COVID-19, reduced social interaction and potential unemployment, and it becomes clear that companies will need to be better prepared to address mental health issues in the workplace.

Mental health has been a growing concern around the world for years, but 2020 has exacerbated many conditions within the mental health arena, including anxiety, depression, and stress. According to Innovu, anxiety disorders have been the most prevalent mental health condition during the pandemic (anxiety disorders increased 6% from March-June 2020 vs. March-June 2019)¹.

There’s plenty of evidence that illustrates the correlation between a healthy workforce and a healthy company balance sheet. Businesses will need to act. They can do so by ensuring their company culture is one of openness and acceptance and that they offer the necessary programs to provide the support workers need. Training and education on this topic are essential for both staff and managers. Lastly, like everything else, support and leadership from senior management is critical in demonstrating that the company prioritizes sound mental health.
